(Hartford) Up at 7.30. Hot day. Mother Gallaudet and Thomas came at 9.45. Twichell called on his way to New Haven at 7.45. Wrote letters. Again looked over papers and pamphlets. Downtown after dinner. Called at H. C. Robinson's. Saw Mr. Blackstone. After tea worked in garden transplanting flowers. Called at Father's. Out in evening with Alice. Called on Judge Carpenter and at Maj. Butler's. Downtown. Bought liver of Briggs. House full. Slept with Johnny. Retired at 12.30. Sent thirteen S.S. letters.

In afternoon wrote article on Household Religion, intending it for Independent. Downtown in afternoon. Paid Seidler & May's bill, and Case, Lockwood & Brainard's. Called at Father's. Met James. Retired at 11.30. Sent nine S.S. letters and on other.

Looked over papers in afternoon and made ready for Morgan St. S.S. (meeting for the first time at 6.30). Out to Camps before tea. After tea called at Twichells. Geo. Bacon there. Down to Morgan St. Chapel with Twichell, J. M. Allen and May. Pleasant service. Gave blackboard exercise. Showery evening. Home at 8. Gurdon called to talk about Annie's visit to Stockbridge. Called on James about it. Received dispatch from Chicago asking if I would think of editing the Nat'l Teacher. Retired at 10.30.

Off at 1, with Johnny & Charley for New York. Wrote up diary. Met Rev. W. C. Walker. Saw James Stotes at New Haven ticket office. At Everett House about 5pm. Dined there. Over to Brooklyn after dinner with Johnny, to see A. Woodruff. Johnny returned. Chatted with Mr. W. until 10.30. Back to hotel at 12. Retired at 12.45. (Telegraphed Woodruff.)

(New York City) Up at 7.30. After breakfast at Everett House walked out with Johnny. Called at St James Hotel. Met army comrades. Was asked to reply in evening to toast to Army of James. Back to Everett House to make ready. (Called at 9 with Charley Camp & Johnny on Dr. A. Clark. Dr. gave gloomy account of him.) At 1pm attended reunion of Army of the James, at Apollo Hall. Opened meeting with prayer. Met Prof. Atherton. Again at Everett House. Johnny & Charley dined at Ashland House. Met them there. They off for home at 3. Left Everett House & went to St. James. Met Dr. Henshaw. In evening attended banquet of Army of the James. Spoke there. Retired at 1.

Bern met us at Fairfield depot. Out to Mrs. Jessup's. Took tea there. Home by 8pm train from Fairfield, stopping two hours at New Haven. Met James at New Haven House. Had talk with Elihu Burritt. Home at 1.45. Slept with Johnny.

Down to Whilldin's. Talked freely with him. Called at S.S. Times office. Wrote Pres't Chapin. Bought gloves for Alice & sent them with letter. Ordered & paid for suit of clothes at Wanamaker's. Dined at Kingsbury's. Off for N.Y. at 6.45. At St. James Hotel at 10.45. Retired after lunch at 11.30.

Lunched with him & Tyler. Called at Tyler’s office. He away. Talked with Wisewell. Met Comm on Uniform Lessons. Over to Brooklyn to Eggleston’s to tea, with Lyon. Talked over S.S. Heart Pres’t Cattel of Lafayette college preach on Christ’s preaching to the “common people”. Home with Kingsbury to lunch. Out to Bethany S.S. in afternoon. Walked to and from it. Taught class in it. Wrote Alice and on letter to Fred. After tea walked with Kellogg & Johnny through worst portions of Phila. Attended outdoor prayer meeting there. Retired at 10.30.

Lunched with Johnny at Continental. Bought clothing for him. Called at S.S. Times office. Talked with Dr. Allibone. Walked about town with Johnny. Dined at Kingsbury’s. Off for New York by 6.45 train. Telegram came to me from S. A. Hubbard. Replied to it. At Astor House at 10.30. Walked about Park. Took ice cream & peach short cake. Retired at 11.30. Sent one S.S. telegram and one letter.

Called at S.S. Workman office. Bought bathing dress for Alice. Dined at Ashland House. Off for home at 3pm. Threw bathing dress bundle to Alice at Fairfield. Met Rev. J. M. Buckley on cars; also Gen. Whitaker. At home at 7pm. Down to Courant office in evening. Had talk with Hawley & Hubbard about post-office. They proposed to me to take it. Promptly declined. Retired at house with Johnny at 10.45.

G. Holland's. He away. Met him at depot. Off for home at 8.30. Retired, at home, at 10.15. Wrote Alice.

Surprised Alice. Chat with Mr. Squire after tea. Walked with Alice to Dr. Rankin's. Back to house and retired at 10.15.

(Called at Mr. Camp’s on my way back from W. Hartford. Talked of plans for Charley.) In evening tried to write, but found myself unable to do so. Retired at 10.30. My head troubled me in night. Seeming explosions in my head. Sent four S.S. letters and one other.

Went to 8th Presb. church. Preached in forenoon for Mr. Reed on 0000 Sowing. At noon dined with Ensign. Charley with me. He went back to hotel. Off with Ensign to Congl. Tabernacle S.S. Young Ross of Co. B., met met there. Out to Mr. Bradley's alone to dinner. Met May Gray there, also Rev. Mr. Chamberlain. He asked me to preach for him. Went with him to hotel. Obtained Hypocrisy sermon & preached it at New Engd church. Back to hotel. Young Waitt of 24th Mass. called. Packed. Retired at 11.

(Chicago, Ill.) Up at 7.15. Off at 9 for Milwaukee with Charley. Mailed letter to Alice at hote. Wrote to her again, and to C. B. Rice, on cars. At Milwaukee & stopped at Newhall House at 1.30. Walked about town with Charley. Mr. Marsh came at 3.30. Bought hat for Charley. Balanced cash. Wrote items for Independent. Off at 9pm in sleeping car for Faribault. Talked with Mr. Marsh until 10.30. Retired, with Charley, in section of sleeping car.

(Milwaukee & St. Paul R.R.) Up at 6.30. Breakfasted at Prairie du Chien, Wis. Off on steamer for No. McGregor. Saw and crossed Mississippi for first time. Beautiful morning. Off again on cars. Wrote Alice & Fred and sketch of morning for newspapers. Wrote up diary. Dined at Owatonna at 3.30. At Faribault soon after 4. Very smoky from prairie fires. Stopped at Barron House. Walked to deaf & dumb institution. Saw Mr. Noyes. He took tea with me at hotel. Met sundry Faribault gentlemen. Out to Rev. Mr. Williams' after tea. Went with him to evening prayer-meeting at church. Pleasant meeting. Said a few words as to Paul before Agrippa. Returned to hotel. Retired at 10.30.

(Faribault, Minn.) Up at 6.30. Soon after breakfast, Rev. Mr. Williams came for us to ride to Northfield. Delightful ride over the country, & pleasant talk on religious themes. Called at Pres. Strong's of Carleton College. Sent telegram to Faribault to Noyes & Lewis. Dined with Pres. Strong. Visited the new college with him. Rode bak to Faribault with Dr. Williams. Took tea with M. B. Lewis & Charley at deaf & dumb institution. Went over the building. Down to S.S. teacher's meeting. Took part in it. Back to hotel. Bade good bye to dear Charley. Off at 9.40 for Milton Junction. Retired in sleeping car at 10.

Dusty & smokey in the morning. Rained from soon afternoon for two hours or so. From Milton Junction & Watertown by Chicago & Northwestern R.R. Mailed letters at Milton. Met Mr. & Mrs. Marsh of Watertown depot. Went with them to Fond du Lac. Attended Convn. of Cong. & Presb. churches of Wisconsin. Heard Past. Merriman preach on Resurrection of the Body. Off at 9 for Chicago. Retired at 9.30 in sleeping car.

Too late for palace car train. Telegraphed to Mr. Clement, sleeping car conductor, to put off our baggage at Dennison. Passed four hours at Newark. Showery afternoon. Dined at hotel. Off at 5.50pm for New York by palace car. (Wrote F. Allen at Newark.) Supped at Dennison. Found baggage there. Wrote in evening again on items for Independent. Retired at 11.

Lunched at Continental restaurant. Called at S.S. Time's office. Again at Union rooms. Dined at Continental at 5 o'clock. Out to 7th Presbn. Ch. in eveng. Heard Ralph Wells on The Teacher Praying. At Holland's finished, read and sent Advance article on "The Chief Attraction in a S.S." Walked up towards Mr. Eustis'. Met him & rode with him to his house. Passed evening there in preparation for next day. Retired at 10.

At Mr. Eustis' after dinner, again prayed & studied. At 3pm went to Memorial Church to Sixth Annivy. of S.S. Addressed all children & adults from Matt 18:12. Went home with Dr. Holland to tea. Delightful visit there. Full talk with him about S.S. course & work. Rode with him to First Ch. Heard Rev. Mr. Schauffler preach. Called at Mrs. Merriam's again. At Massasoit & retired at 10.45.

Stopped at Williamantic half-an-hour. On the New London train met Rev. Mr Schaffer. Talked over Springfield matters with him. Fred me me at depot in Norwich. Rode with him to Taftville. Examined new mill there. Took tea with him. Rode back to Norwich. Called on Col. Coit.

Johnny went with them to E. Hartford. Out to Camps. On way back stopped in to hear new organ at Asylum Hill Church. Retired at 11.30. Frank Wattles stopped with Johnny.

(Hartford) Up at 7.45. Household glad in Christmas giving and receiving. Fletcher called to borrow baby carriage. Johnny downtown early to arrange for his Christmas dinner. Down to City Hall with Sophy, about 2pm. Stopped to teacher's dinner after Christmas dinner of scholars. Presented cake to Mrs. Hawley. Home with Johnny. Prof. Atherton at house. After tea out to Gen. Hawley's with him to secure letter for Atherton to Pres. Grant, asking Atherton's appointment on Labor Commission. Wrote Gov. Buckingham. Retired at 11.

(Hartford) Up at 6 to see Atherton off. Again to bed. Slept until 9.15. Sophy made ready for a start to New York. She left with James and Sarah and Annie at 1pm. Marsh came in afternoon. Rev. L. P. Chamberlain of Chicago called and took tea. Wrote on items for Independent. Retired at 10.30.

(Hartford) Up at 8.30. Bright, warm day. Father called to see about New Haven R.R. dividends. Wrote letters. Ned called. Down to Mr. Fessenden's and to depot at 1pm with him. He off for Washn. Johnny went at 1.50 to New London. Down to bank. Exchanged $1000 - Springd City bond for Conn. West R.R. bond for Father. Wrote letters again. Off at 4.50 with Mr. Marsh for Springd. Met Geo. Wattles. Supped at Massasoit. Sent item for Independent, off with George at 8.25 for Worcester. At Bay State House at 10.30, after writing on notes of address. Retired at 10.50.
