(Hartford) Up at 8. Slosson and Annie off for Middletown. Wrote letters until noon. Down to depot. Out to Gen. Hawley's house. After dinner Hawley called on me. Long talk with him about Butler Controversy. Downtown. Called on Mr. Fessenden. He away. Talk with him about old times and new. Off at 7.10 for Springfield. Called at Mrs. Merriam's. Read letter to George to her. Called at Holland's house and office. Long talk with him about S.S. matters. Wrote Gurdon. Retired at Massasoit at 11.45. (Sent six S.S. letters and two others.)
