Friday, October 6, 1871

(Chicago & NW R.R.) Up at 5. At Chicago at 5.40. Head aching from bad air. Rode to Clifton House. Walked about town before breakfast. After breakfast met Senator Trumbull. Called at his office. Wrote Alice. Met Sen. Trumbull. Down to Post Office. Received large mail from home. Read and answered letters. Called at Gen. White's & Lyons. Dined at 1.15. Called at Advance office. Read exchange. Called at Lyon's again. Had talk with him & Blackmer. Called at Maj. Whittle's, Gen. Stockton's, & Gen. McClurg's. Supped at Clifton House. Down to cars of Chicago & Alton R.R. soon after 7. Bought sleeping car ticket. Off at 9pm for St. Louis. Retired at 9.30.
