(Hartford) Up at 7.45. After breakfast worked on copy of Army of the James speech for Gen. Carleton. Wrote letters and read others. Prepared notes for S.S. column of Independent. Wrote at Father's most of day. Sent Johnny's clothing to the wash. Downtown. Called at Courant office. In evening downtown again. Bought ice-cream at Sykes. Home with it at 9.40. Retired at 10.30. Sent eight S.S. letters and three others.
