Noted miles of travel on diary going & coming on cars. Out to Camps on "snow-plow" of horse-railroad. Had talk with Mr. Wright. Sent off seven S. S. letters. Down to Hall of G.A.R. to attend installation of officers. Paid Brigg's bill. Called at Father's on way home. Chas. Y. Hempsted asked me to have a part at his funeral. Wrote up diary notes. Retired at 12.50.

S. letters and two others. Downtown in evening. Called at E. J. Fuller's, Ruggles', Post-office etc. Called at Father's. Wrote an hour and a half. Wrote up diary. Snow held up for awhile during the day commenced again in evening. Took bath. Retired at 11.45.

Met young Bartlett, Mrs. Tryon & Geo. M. Ives. Walked out to Tryon's to see Mr. Buell. Met Sam Coit & H. J. Johnson. Talked with them about giving to the Lord. After tea, down to Centre Ch. young people's meeting. Thence to Morgan St. S. S. Concert. Spoke there. Met Twichell. Walked with him to Dr. Bushnell's. Had delightful call there. Home at 9.50. Called at Father's. Wrote awhile. Retired at 11.30.

Terrible walking in 'slosh' and snow in the city. Retired in 'black and gilt' room at 11.30. Sent three S. S. letters.

At noon wrote again on sermon. With Mr. Atwood attended several Cong'l S. Schools. In aft'n preached at South Church from Deut. 33:25. Dined with Mr. Atwood. In early evening attended Union S. S. meeting at So. Church. Preached to childred from Ps. 60:4. Later met a number of army friends & others at Mr. Osgood's. Wrote awhile. Retired at 1am.

Back to hotel at 9.30. Talked awhile with Marsh. Wrote awhile. Retired at 11.10, half sick.

Called at Bronson's, Bank, Ruggle's, etc. After dinner wrote again. Rev. L. W. Bacon came from Brooklyn to attend meeting at Pearl St. Church. Walked downtown with him to see Mr. Gage's. Home to tea. Again downtown to Pearl St. Church parlors, where he exhibited his Book of Worship to a gathering interested. Back with him to house. Sat & talked until midnight. Convention. Col. Shinkle of Ky temporary chairman. I temporary secretary. Large attendance. Geo. H. Stuart permanent chairman. I secretary. At noon Convention was photographed. Went hom to dinner with Mr. Dorrance. At convention in afternoon. Met Atherton. Went with him & others to Rev. Dr. Fish's to tea. In evening, spoke on Home and S.S. Instruction. H. Thane Miller & others spoke. Took ice cream etc. with Atherton. Back to Mr. Dorrance's at 11. Retired, with Atherton at 12. Talked until 1.

Attended at Merrell's section. Took tea at Mr. Dorrance's. Attended Convention in evening. Spoke in lower room at overflow meeting. Later, returned to upper room. Back to Mr. Dorrance's. Passed night with Mr. Merrill. Retired, with severe head-ache at 12.15.

Back to Conv'n at 8pm for closing service. Delightful occasion. Conv'n adjourned at 11pm. Off for New York at 12.15. Reached Astor House at 12.45. Retired at 1.10. Mr & Mrs. Douglass on cars and at Astor House.

Returned to house. Put on chaplain's uniform and rode with Gen. Hawley as escort to the Governor (of other states and ex-Govs) carriage. Lunched at Gov. Jewell's room. Home to dinner at 4pm after hearing message at State House. Down to Allyn House in evening to dinner with staffs of Governors. Made out monthly report. Sent one S.S. letter. Home from dinner at Allyn House at 11. Retired at 11.50.

Had earnest and profitable talk with Fred. Sat in smoking car. Snake ran loose there. Excitement and scattering. Took supper at Rochester. Dozed on seat in sleeping car. Fred left me home at 2am. Retired and 2.15 am.

(Hartford) Up at 6.30. Packed. Wrote letter to Wurts with monthly statement. Off with Sophy & May to Stamford at 8.10. Stopped there. Called at Dr. Humphrey's & Calvin Child's. Off again for Greenwich. Left children there, having telegraphed Slosson. Thence to New York. Reached Tyler's office at 4. Met Vincent. Off with him for Bloomfield, N.Y. Passed evening & night at Rev. C. E. Knox's. Spoke in evening at Presb'n Church. Retired with Vincent at 12.15. Sent letter.

At Phila. called at Union rooms. Reported to Mr. Wurts from trip south. Talked with Dr. Allibone. Thence to young Fish's store & to S.S. Times office. Dined late. Off for N.Y. at 6.45. Attempted to take New Haven boat train at 11pm. Thence to 5th Av. Hotel. After supper met Caroline Shaw née Gallaudet & others. Retired at 12.45. Wrote Fred Camp & Fred Fish & Gray.

Called at Fred Baldwin's, also at Miss May Bacon's. Bought umbrella. Took supper at New Haven Hotel. Off for home at 8.20. Met Ned Gallaudet & family on cars. Home at 10. Took bath. Retired at 11.15. Wrote Gray.

(Hartford) Up at 8.30. Hot day. Read papers and books in Alice's room. Lay down awhile. After dinner rode with G. W. Williams to Wethersfield Avenue Chapel to S.S. Concert. Subject, Joy. Spoke at close of recitations. Used black board. Rode back with Mr. Williams. Wrote on letter to Gray. Then to Fred. Out to Camps after tea. Stopped at Mr. Rice's on way back. Called at father's. Wrote again. Retired at 10.45.

(Hartford) Waked early by ringing of church bells, popped of crackers, etc. Celebrated as Fourth. Wrote letters before & after dinner. Sent off 3 S.S. letters and 1 other. Down to bank before dinner. At 4.30 went to depot to take train to Spring'd. Found it fifty minutes late. Talked with Mr. Nott. Commenced letter to Allen. Up to Spring'd at 5.40. Took supper at Massasoit. Called at Mrs. Merriam's. Thence to Holland's. With him to Massasoit. Passed night there. Retired at 11.15.

Called at Shute's, Thacher's, Noyes', Kinsley's, Hutchings'. Also at office of Cong'l & Rec'r. Again at Thacher's, Shute's, & Kinsley's. Dined at Parker House. At Thacher's met Fred's friend Geo. Thacher & had pleasant talk with him. Again at Shute', Hatchings', & Kinsley's. Had corns cut at Dr. Perkin's. Had talk with him about Mr. Torrey. Again at Shute's. After supper at Parker's, met Miss Hammersley & others. Off for home at 9pm. Wrote awhile. Slept awhile. Home at 1.40. Retired at 2.15. Tel'd Alice.

Mary Gordon went to Boston. Had ice-cream at dinner (& strawberries from Boston). Sent eleven S.S. letters and three others. Downtown after dinner. Paid sundry bills. In evening went with Alice to Mr. Fessenden's. Thence to Christ Church to heard Ned deliver his oration before Trinity College House of Convocations. Had talk with Ned about it, later. Again at Mr. Fessenden's house at 11.30. Tho. G. with us. Retired at 12.15. Ned & Susy off at midnight for New York & Liverpool.

At New Haven called at D. H. Wiley's, Miss Bacon's, Rev. E. L. Clark's, Rev. Dr. Bacon's, F. T. Jarman's, J. G. North's, Prof. H. N. Day's & Fred Baldwin's. Had talk with Kirkham. Took tea at New Haven Hotel. Again called at Prof Day's. Met Miss Jenny Baldwin & Fred, at Mr. Wilcox's, & met him & family at Miss Bacon's mother's as I came away. Attempted to take steam boat train home. Missed it. Tel'd Alice. Back to New Haven House. Wrote on letter to Fred. Off for home at 11.15. Home & retired at 1.30. Met Vanderbilt on cars & Brownell at Depot. Sent 15 S.S. letters.
