(Westfield, Mass.) Up at 7.45. After breakfast rode to depot with Hopkins. Thence with him in his sleigh to Springfield. Met Holland & Marsh. Off for home at 12. Met Lucy Van Alen Hurd on cars. Home at 1.15 finding Alice better but Gracie poorer. Port called in aft'n. Gave him mission to Norwalk & Danbury. Counted money rec'd. Downtown to see Dr. Hunt. Called at Father's. Put plaster on Gracie. Watched her anxiously. Wrote up cash a/p and made notes of expenses, etc. Retired about 2am.

(Hartford, Ct.) Up at 7.45. Severe snow-storm. Off for Springfield at 9.40. Called at Holland's, Bryan's, & Marsh's. Also on E. G. Allen. Dined with Holland. Home by 2.20 train. Noted miles of travel on diary going & coming on cars. Out to Camps on "snow-plow" of horse-railroad. Had talk with Mr. Wright. Sent off seven S. S. letters. Down to Hall of G.A.R. to attend installation of officers. Paid Brigg's bill. Called at Father's on way home. Chas. Y. Hempsted asked me to have a part at his funeral. Wrote up diary notes. Retired at 12.50.

(Hartford) Heavy fall of snow on ground. Heard from Miss Mather. Downtown after breakfast. Called at Dea. Steele's, Dea. Allen's, T. W. Russell's & Post office. Sent off seven S. S. letters and two others. Downtown in evening. Called at E. J. Fuller's, Ruggles', Post-office etc. Called at Father's. Wrote an hour and a half. Wrote up diary. Snow held up for awhile during the day commenced again in evening. Took bath. Retired at 11.45.

(Hartford) Up at 8.30. Read awhile after breakfast. Read Home Service with children. At 3pm went with Alice to Communion service at Asylum Hill church. Her first attendance since July. Met young Bartlett, Mrs. Tryon & Geo. M. Ives. Walked out to Tryon's to see Mr. Buell. Met Sam Coit & H. J. Johnson. Talked with them about giving to the Lord. After tea, down to Centre Ch. young people's meeting. Thence to Morgan St. S. S. Concert. Spoke there. Met Twichell. Walked with him to Dr. Bushnell's. Had delightful call there. Home at 9.50. Called at Father's. Wrote awhile. Retired at 11.30.

(Hartford) Up at 8.15. Thomas Gill called. Wrote awhile. Sent letter to Fred. Made out monthly report to Phil'a. Downtown before dinner. Bought fork for Capt. Parker's baby. Obtained check. Called on T. W. Russell, D. Hillyer etc. after dinner. Off at 3.30pm for New York. Lent almanack to Erwin. At 8.20 reached Mary Prime's. After lunch returned to Baldwin's. Back to Prime's at 10. Terrible walking in 'slosh' and snow in the city. Retired in 'black and gilt' room at 11.30. Sent three S. S. letters.

Met Bissell, Burtis, & Tyler. Uptown with Burtis. Called at Prime's for bag. Off for Phil'a at 6.30. Reached Continental at 10.50. Found Ned & Susy there. Retired at 12.50. Sent four S. S. letters.

Times office. Dined at Continental. Wrote Fred. Out to W. Phila. to Alfred Taylor's to tea. Back to Geo. H. Stuart's. Wrote awhile at Cont'l Hotel. Off for New York at midnight. Turbulent and queer passengers. Little sleep.

(New Jersey R. R.) Reached New York about 5am. Rode from Astor House in 3d Av. car to 23rd St. Reached 5th Av. Hotel about 6. Wrote on letter in barroom. Lunched at 24th St. depot. Off for home at 8am. Had talk with student on cars. Looked over plate proofs of Children in the Temple. Met Fletcher at New Haven. Home at 12.25. Downtown after dinner. Letter from Fred, Allen & others. Called at Russell's, Spaulding's, etc. Telegraphed. Home at 3.30. Wrote several letters. Downtown with letters. Rode to Mr. Spaulding's. Saw him. Home at 5.45. Made ready for eve'g service. Rode to East Hartford with J. B. Smith. Preached at Cong'l Chapel there. from Ps 17:11. Home at 9.30. Called at Father's. Balanced cash. Retired at 11.40.

Worked on changes for book. Wrote Fred. Off for Salem at 5.40pm. Met Capt. Hayward. Took supper at Mr. Osgood's. Attended prayer-meeting at Tabernacle Church chapel. Wrote in room awhile. Retired at 12.15.

(Salem, Mass.) Up at 7.50. Bright, pleasant day. Worked on sermon. Attended South Cong'l Church in forenoon and heard good sermon from Rev. Mr. Atwood on Jacob after his wrestling with God. At noon wrote again on sermon. With Mr. Atwood attended several Cong'l S. Schools. In aft'n preached at South Church from Deut. 33:25. Dined with Mr. Atwood. In early evening attended Union S. S. meeting at So. Church. Preached to childred from Ps. 60:4. Later met a number of army friends & others at Mr. Osgood's. Wrote awhile. Retired at 1am.

(Salem, Mass.) Up at 7.50. After breakfast, Howard, of Co. G. 24th Mass, called on me. Walked about town with Mr. Osgood & Mr. Atwood. Saw curiosities in court-house and elsewhere. Off at 11am for Boston. Met Capt. Shreve on cars. Called at Shute's, Kinsley's, Pratt's, Noyes', etc. Wrote Fred. Made notes for changes of new book. Judge Smith called at Shute's. At 9pm off for home. Reached home at 1.40. News had come of Miner Fowler's death. Mother Gallaudet much troubled. Talked with her & Alice awhile. Retired at 2.45. In Boston had corns cut. Called at Rev. Mr. Foljambe's. Tel'd W. J. Holland.

Off at 4.45 for Springfield. Called at Holland's. Received first finished copies of Children in the Temple. Home at 7.15. Called at Father's & James'. Slosson & Annie & Sophy Van Alen at Father's. Wrote awhile. Sent four S. S. letters, two telegrams and one other letter. Retired at 12.

Called there at Jarman's and Cutter's & Snow's. Mrs. G. went to Guilford at 3.15. Came home by 3.15 train. Little "Ally" had fallen into bathing tub and scalded herself. A merciful deliverance from severe injury. Downtown at 8.45. Called at Courant office & office of Post. Had long talk with Hawley. Sent off four more S. S. letters, one telegram and two other letters. Read awhile. Retired at 12.10.

Attended at rooms of Y.M.C.A., a meeting of gentlemen to talk over a teacher's institute. Wrote letters. downtown in eve'g. Called at office of Post. "Children in the Temple" on sale. Package came to me from Holland. Left copies with Tryon & R. C. Robinson. Packed various things for the next day's start, including book & package for Fred. Retired at 12.20. Sent twenty-six S. S. letters & one other.

Downtown after lunch. Called at 599 Bdway. Thence to Str. San Salvador. Saw W'm Noland. Called at Wallace's. Mailed letter. Bought frames & basket. Dined at Prime's. Called at Cranes & at Dr. Tyng's. Back to Prime's at 9.40. Quite hoarse from cold. Talked with Germaines & Pampellups. Retired, after packing basket for Fred, at 11.50.

Attended with him Young Men's Christian Assoc. meeting. Spoke there. After supper went to Meth. Epis. Church to Union meeting with half of Am. S. S. Union. Spoke there with Fletcher & Marsh. Back to hotel at 9.30. Talked awhile with Marsh. Wrote awhile. Retired at 11.10, half sick.

Long talk with him about his early life. Reached Continental at 8.45. After supper talked again until midnight. Retired at 12.30. Beautiful evening after dark cold day. Sent four S. S. letters.

Met Peters of California. Called at Dr. Newton's. Met young Newton. Called at S. S. Times office. Dined at 3pm. Called again at Times office. Wrote Fred. Off for New York at 6pm. Sent one S. S. letter. Reached 5th Av Hotel at 10.30. Met Kinsley & others there. Gray went to his room after supper. I retired at 12.45.

Spoke there from Matt. 26:56 Talked with young Cook after service. Back to Winsted. Talked with Mr. Wetherby & Mr. Peters until 10.30. Wrote until 12.20. Retired at 12.30.

Called on Rockwell, Dudley, Hurlbut, Gay, Case, Camps, Hinsdale, Noble & etc. Dined at hotel. In afternon called at Mr. Boyd's, Mrs. Beardsley, Mr. & Mrs. Terry's etc. In evening, called at T. M. Clarke's. Had pleasant talk with Mrs. Clarke about her children. Called also at Hinsdale's & Mr. Wetherly's. Wrote awhile. Sent off one personal letter. Retired, with Peters, at hotel room, at 11.30.

Hawley's room. At 2pm went to Springfield. Called at Holland's. Sent off books to England. Read notice of my book in Eggleston's magazine. Supped at the Massasoit. Off for Westfield at 6.30. Very rainy day and evening. Called on H. Hopkins. Preached for him from Mark 12:29, 30. Back to Hopkins with Burnell of Co. K. He seemingly surrended himself to Jesus. With Hopkins until 12.30. Sent sixteen S. S. letters and three others.

Wrote on letter to Fred. Retired at 1.15. Sent six S. S. letters.

(Hartford) Up at 7.40. Wrote on Essay and on letters. Downtown to Watkinson library. Met Prof. Stowe. Home with James. Off for noon express train for New Haven. Train ran off track above Windsor. Several injured. Waited for it an hour and a half. Gov. Hawley and others on cars. Finished letter to Fred. Mailed it at New Haven. Called at Jarman's, on Keep and Richards, and took tea at Rev. E. L. Clark's. Raining hard in evening. Called on May Bacon in evening. Long talk with her about Gray. Off for New York by 11pm boat. Wrote Gray. Retired at 11.45. Sent six S. S. letters and two others.

Parsons & others on cars. Had discussion with theological student as to care of children. Home at 7.30. Downtown & called at Dr. Hunt's & at Geer & Pond's for _____ books. Returning home, sent off several letters. Out to Prof. Stowe's to see Charley. After tea out to Mr. Keep's to talk with Mrs. Olmstead about Gray. Took quinine freely. Called at Father's. Annie arrived there. Wrote up diary. Sent four S. S. letters and one other. Retired at 11.15.

Off at 11pm for New Haven on Str. Traveller. State room with strangers. Retired at 11.45.

At 1am she broke down (shared state room with stranger - retiring at 11.30.)

Found letters from Fred, Gray, & others. Retired at 2.15am. Sent letter to Fred from Phila.
