(Hartford) Bright day. Out with Sophy & Gurdon to Pearl St. Ch. in forenoon to hear Rev. W. A. Moore preach on Home Evangelization. Dined at Father's. Down to Centre Ch. S.S. Thence to Pearl St. Ch. to hear Mr. Moore on Christian Giving. Met him & Mr. Gage. Talked with & read to children. Took tea at Father's. Home for evening. Wrote to Alice and on letter to Fred. Retired at 11. Sent "Bedouin" back by express to Pratt.

(Hartford) Beautiful day. Up at 7.45. Balanced cash. Wrote letters. Downtown to post-office. Letter from Fred. Called at Courant office. Rec'd $40 from Mr. Camp. Ordered suit of clothes at Fisher's. Ordered ice-cream etc. for Sophy. Sent cloak back to Boston. Wrote again in afternoon. Sophy's birth-day. Charley & Lizzie Camp & Annie Trumbull came to take tea with her. Off at 7.50 for Co. Col.. Wrote L. Wessells from depot at Hartford. At Co. Col. found no carriage. Walked to Greenwich. Reached Slosson's about midnight. Alice not there. Had supper. Retired at 1.45. Cold night. Sent fifteen S.S. letters and two others and one telegram.

(Greenwich, Ct.) Up at 7.45. Cold morning. Down to depot with Slosson and met Allie and Alice at 10am. Back to house. Wrote Shute, Rev. R. J. Robinson, and Mr. Camp. Off for New York at 1.58. Reached there at 3.15. Called at Tyler's. Met Sophy van Alen, Mr. Cummings & Mr. Bissell. Off for Phila. at 5pm. (Mailed letter to Fred from New York.) Met Chas. Collins on street car. Stopped at Continental. Called at Dr. Naphey's office. Retired at 11.30.

(Philadelphia) Up at 7.30. Bright day and cold. Met Mr. Langton & Mr. Collins at breakfast. Called at Union rooms, at S.S. Prime's office and at Dr. Naphey's office. Bought hat for Alice. Found Dr. N. and he dined with me. Called at Dr. D. G. Brinton's to see about Phila. hygienic influences for Fred's case. Again at S.S. Union rooms. In evening, took supper at hotel and wrote in room to Allen and to Fred. Retired at 11.45.

(Phila.) Up at 7.50. After breakfast called at Sharpless' & bought dress for Alice. Called at Union rooms. Talked with Wurts & Dr. Allibone. Out with Wurts to see Kingsbury. He not in town. Called at Presb'n Bd of Rubn - and at Bd of Education. Obtained valuable pamphlets on Church care of children. Called at Geo. H. Stuart's and on Henry Fish. The latter dined with me. Drs. Napheys & Brinton called. Again at Union rooms. Off at 6.45 for New York. Wrote Mr. Camp & Fred on cars. Reached Astor House at 10.45. Mailed letters. After supper retired at midnight.

(New York) Up at 7.45. After breakfast, rode to Bible House. Had talk with Tyler about Advance correspondence. Called at Uncle Tom Allen's. Off, after lunch in depot at 27th St. for Greenwich, at 1.49. Met Dr. Dean on cars. Reached Slosson's about 4pm. Sophy Cowen there. Met Alice & Allie. Passed evening at house. Retired at 11.

(Greenwich, Ct.) Up at 6.20. Cold morning. After breakfast rode to depot in Slosson's team, with Henry. Off at 8.30 for New Haven. Called at Dea. Benjamin's and at Mr. Hooker's carriage repository. Off at 11 for home. Met Col. Lynch, A. H. Byington, Rev. C. C. Carpenter and others. Alice and Allie with me. Home at 1pm. Met Thos. Gallaudet at depot. Ned & Susie in town. Downtown after dinner. Delivered receipt of L. Knowles Jr. to Mr. Shipman for $8.400. He had to send check to A. Kirkpatrick. Called at Fisher & Teller's. Home & worked on letters. Thos. Gallaudet called. In evening, Ned called. Retired at 10.30. Sent four S.S. letters and two others.

(Hartford) Up at 7.50. Down with Sophy to Centre Church. Heard Rev. Mr. Gould preach on "What shall it profit a man etc." Met Ned & Susie. In afternoon Alice & children went out to Asylum Hill S.S. Concert & heard Mr. Twichell preach to children. May confessed about the sugar shoe. Sad time with her. Ned and Susie came to tea. Had talk with Ned in the evening about our relations. Retired at 11.

(Hartford) Up at 7.25. Cold, cloudy day. Sent word to Ned by Sophy. He called after breakfast. Had talk with him. He left with Susie. Wrote him. Talked with Alice. She went down in afternoon shopping and to see Ned. Left in 3.30pm train for New Haven. Called at Mr. Hooker's, Jarman's, and Dea. Bingham's. Took supper at New Haven House. Called at Mrs. Champion's. Saw young Benjamin. Home by steamboat train in evening. Retired at 11.30. Sent five S.S. letters and two others.

(Hartford) Up at 8.15. Dr.Napheys called. Wrote awhile after breakfast. Talked with Napheys. Read letters. Off with Napheys for Springfield at noon. Dined at Massasoit. Called at Holland's to talk over publishing of Napheys books. Called at Mrs. Merriam's. Back to Hartford by 5.10pm train. Dr. Napheys followed at 6. After supper called with Napheys on ____ Goodrich. Off at 9.40 for Springfield with Gray's trunks. Stopped at Mrs. Merriam's. Opened trunks and examined them. Retired at 2.40. Sent three S.S. letters and one other.

(Springfield, Mass.) Awoke at 6.40. Up at 6.45 and hurriedly dressed and up to Massasoit. Breakfasted there, and off for Boston at 7.15. Met Dea. Burt, Mr. Johnson, Pre't Clark and Mr. Soule on cars. Wrote Fred. Reached Boston about 11. Called at Winter St. and on Pratt. Stopped at Parker House. Shute busy all day at his S.S. Did not see him. Called at Congl office, at Pollard's & Goodman's. Called on Rev. Mr. Longworthy and at Noyes'. Met Rev. Mr. H. H. Murray. Had corns cut. Met Hawley at 6. Pleasant gathering. Said a few words of greeting. Chatted with Gen'l Osborn & Rockwell. Later, sat with Hawley until 12, after walk to Boston Journal office. Retired at 12.15.

(Boston) Up at 8. After breakfast with Chapman, called at Shute's, on Richardson, and Abbott, at Noyes' & Pollard's. Off at 11.10 for Providence. Tel'd Record. Reached Providence about noon. Mr. Rogers formerly of navy on cars. Rode to Record's. Met him and with him called at Thomas'. Off for home at 2.30. Reached home about 6.30. Found letter from Fred. Sent letter to Rev. W. W. Belden & another to Fred. Took bath. Read letters. Retired at 11.

Ch. at Chapel, at their sociable. Addressed them and answered questions. Sat with Holland afterward at Massasoit until midnight. Retired at 12.30.

(Springfield, Mass.) Up at 7. Bright autumn day. After breakfast at Massasoit, called at Mrs. Merriam's. Rode with her to depot. Off at 9am for Westfield. Called there on Harry Hopkins. Thence to depot. Telegraphed Walter Camp. Returned to Springfield. Saw Holland. Dined at Massasoit. Wrote Napheys. At 12, rode to Mt. Tom & East Hampton. Met Walter Camp. Looked for Forbes brothers. Called at Dr. Seelye's. Mr Dr. Henshaw. Found Forbes boys. Bowled in gymnasium alley with Walter. Back to Westfield by 6.30 train. Stopped with Hopkins. Took tea with him at one of his parishoners. Called at Judge Bate's office to hear No. Blandford case before referees. Home with Harry at 10. Retired at 12.

(Westfield, Mass.) Up at 7.45. Cold, raw day. After reading in study, and looking over sermon, went to forenoon service at 2d. Congl. Ch. and preached for Hopkins from text Mk 1:37. Stopped at S.S. at noon. Opened it with a prayer. After lunch, attended Communion service. Aided Hopkins in it. Read awhile after it. At 6pm had children's service. At 7 attended monthly concert and spoke at it. Sat with Harry Hopkins until midnight.

(Westfield, Mass.) Up at 7.40. Cold morning. Snow falling. At 10.50 left for Springfield. Met Maj. Pasco and cousin on cars. called at Holland's. Mailed letter to Fred. Off at noon for house. Met Mr. & Mrs. Taylor of California, with messages for Alice Clancy. Home at 1.10. Out to Twichell's. Passed an hour and a half there. Down to Fisher's with new suit. No snow in Hartford. Tel'd McCullagh. Rec'd book from L. Bill, models from Randolph, & letters from Fred & his father. Took tea at Mother's. Wrote in diary. Walked out to Camp's and back with Alice. Sent four S.S. letters.

(Hartford) Up at 8. Wrote letters all forenoon. Downtown after dinner. Saw Kitty Camp about Charley. Mr. Camp called. Sent off twelve S.S. letters and two others. Letter from Fred in the evening. Commenced essay on The Church and the Sunday School. Read its opening to Alice. Retired at 11.30.

(Hartford) Up at 8.30. Pleasant day. Worked at essay all forenoon. Down to Fisher's at noon. Obtained new suit as refinished. Down with Alice to Park at 2pm at unveiling of Bishop Brownell's statue. Pleasant and memorable occasion. Went thence with Govs. Jewell & Hawley to 25th C.V. reunion at U.S. Hotel. Made address after dinner. Met ALice on way home. Called at Father's. Had talk about tobacco with Gurdon. Wrote on essay until 2am. Retired at 2.40. Sent eight S.S. letters and one other.

Letter from Fred at 10.30am. Letter from Frank Allen at 4.40pm. Worked on essay in evening until 11.30. Took bath. Retired at 12.30. Sent five S.S. letters.

Met Mr. Nott & Prof. Henry on cars. Reached Norwich at 5. Rev. Mr. Dana & Mr. Coit met me. Took tea with Mr. Dana. Out in evening to hear "Mark Twain" lecture on Sandwich Islands. Home with Mr. Coit. Worked on essay until midnight. Retired at 12.20. Sent four S.S. letters and three others.

Over to Broadway Ch. S.S. Attended service there. Heard Rev. Mr. Merriman preach on Religious Drifting. Met him & Gov. Buckingham at close of service. Home with Mr. Coit. Read & wrote & talked until evening. Out to Broadway S.S. Concert at 7pm. Spoke there, using deaf-mute signs. Over to 2d. Congl. Ch. S.S. Concert. Mr. G. W. Huntington read paper on The Return from the Captivity of the Jews. Followed him with remarks on a returned prisoner's joy. Read & wrote & talked after meeting. Retired at 11.20.

Finished & sent one to Fred. Off with Alice by noon express train for New York. Lunched at 27th St. depot. at 5.15. Downtown to Jersey City ferry. Train delayed from trouble at the Hackensack draw. Off at 6.50 for Newark. Called there at Rev. Dr. Fish's. Thence to Park Presb'n Church to attend S.S. Teacher's Association. Read my essay on the Church & the S.S. Home with Mr. & Mrs. Dorrance. Stopping at Dr. Fish's. Retired at 11.30.

(Newark, N.Y.) Up at 7.30. After breakfast, went to the house top to look out. Went uptown to Dr. Fish's. Thence to Broad St. depot. In to New York with Mr. Dorrance. Called at Wallace's. Left Alice there. Called at Astor Fire Ins. Co. on Mr. Torrance. Back to Wallace's. Sent Alice uptown. Called at Mr. Crane's on Trout St. & on Pine St.; also on Mr. Dunklee's, S. G. Goodrich, J. H. Washburn's, & looked vainly for Bunnell & Wilder. Up to 18th St. Dined at Thos. Gallaudet's. Downtown to Wallace's with Alice. Lunched at Dorlon's. Over to Brooklyn. Alice went with Wallace. I looked up Albert Miller. Supped at Wallace's. Called on Chap. Dorrance. Back to Wallace's. Wrote up diary. Retired at 11.15.

Saw young Albert Miller. Gave him $50. Off for New York. Lunched at Dorlon's. Called at Wallace's, Mr. Crane's, Mr. Duncklee's, and Home Ins. Co. Had hair cut. Called at Tyler's. Met Alice at 27th St. Off for home by 3pm train. Heavy train. Behind time. Home at 8.15. Letter from Fred. Read letters. Called at Father's, Annie & Slosson there. Alice received letter from Ned. Retired at 12.30. Wrote & sent one S.S. letter and one other.

At 2pm, met all the three households, with Slosson and Annie at James' to dine. Pleasant gathering. Charley Camp called. Went down to see Mr. Fessenden's with him to see about place in Phoenix Ins. Co. office. Home and worked on letters. Charley aided me on circulars. Fletcher in town during day. Retired at 12. Sent ten S.S. letters & telegrams & one other letter.

(Hartford) Up at 8. Charley Camp, Allen & Fletcher came. Telegram from L. W. Bacon announced coming of Father Hyacinthe. Met them, with James at cars. Walked uptown. Then took carriage around town. Stopped at Dr. Bushnell's, Mr. Gage's, Wadsworth Atheneum & Centre Church cemetery. Drove through park. Hyacinthe and Bacon went on to Boston by noon express. Down to office of Post. In afternoon wrote letters. Downtown in evening. Called at Courant office. Tel'd Mrs. Merriam. Off at 10.40 for Springfield. Called at Mrs. Merriam's. Sat there until 1.50. Back to Massasoit. Retired at 2.30. Sent fourteen S.S. letters & tel. & one other.

Reached Boston at 11.15. Called at Shute's. Off at 12 for Fall River. Reached there about 2.15. Found McCullagh at Mt. Hope House. Lunched at restaurant. Commenced letter to Fred. Record came about 5.40. After tea, called with him on Dr. Thurston, Rev. Mr. Adams, Rev. Mr. Haughwort, & R. K. Remington. Met Rev. Dr. Duncan. Back to hotel at 9.40. Retired at 10.30.

Bap Church preached from Luke 18:23. After dinner rode again & visited S.S.'s of Cent'l Congl. 1st Bap & 2d Conlg Churches. Spoke four times. In aft'n preached at 2d Cong Ch. from 2 Ki 2:21. Took tea with Remington. In evening addressed union meeting at Central Cong Ch. with McCullagh & Record. Wrote awhile after meeting at hotel. Retired at 11.20.

Met Marsh at 5pm. Went with him and McC. to Marlboro House to tea. Tel'd Alice. Off for home at 9pm. Met Rev. Mr. Goodridge, S.B. Haskell and others on cars. Home at 1.35am. Retired at 2.10.

Occupied box with Twichell. Called at Father's after lecture. Retired at 11.15. Sent twelve S.S. letters & telegrams & two others. Also one to Gresham.

Stopped at Germantown Junction & up to Mr. Kingsbury's at 10pm. Delightful evening with family there. Retired at midnight. Sent eight S.S. letters and two others.

Spoke there. Out with Mr. Kingsbury to his home again. Retired at 12.15.

Dined in 8th St. Off for home at 4.30. Reached home at 9.10. Found Alice at Mr. Fessenden's. Mrs. F very low. Prayed with her. Back to house at 10.15. Retired at 11.15. Reached Salem about 8 o'clock. Snowing. Stopped at Mrs. Lefavour's. Called at Rev. S. H. Pratt's. Met Rev. F. F. Emerson there. Back to Mrs. Lefavour's about 10pm. Retired at 11.30. Sent five S.S. letters and telegrams and one other.

Down to post-office. Wrote up diary. Called at Father's. Read article on Libraries there. Retired at 11.30. Sent two S.S. letters, one S.S. telegram, one other letter, and one other telegram.

Sent seven S.S. letters and three others.

Called at Noyes, Pratt's, Congregationlist office, etc. After dinner with Shute, out to Durant's. Had cards printed. Out to Lowell by 6pm train. Called at J. K. Chase's store, and Y.M.C.A. rooms. Thence to Mr. Chase's house for night. After talk with family, retired, with Mr. McCullagh, at 11pm. Snowy evening. Sent one S.S. letter and one other.

(Hartford) Up at 6.10. Baby not well. Downtown. Obtained watch from Steele's. Called at Phelps' and Kibbe's as to joiner work. Called at Courant office, Talcott & Fuller's, Brooks', post-office, J. G. Wells', Ch. Oak bank, etc. Paid Hatch & Tyler's bill for Father. Johnny came home at 11.20. Met him at cars. Looked at room. Talked over his brother George's plans. Wrote up diary. After dinner Mr. Phelps called to plan for ventilator and fence. Showery afternoon. Downtown with Johnny. Bought swing and knife. Late tea. Johnny wrote on draft of sketch of Convention. Made notes of travel for 1870, and other items for Annl. Rep't. Hung pictures in children's rooms. Retired at 12. Sent five S.S. letters.

Friday, April 14, 1871

(Hartford) Bright day. Up at 7.40. Kebbe's man came to measure for shelves and put up swing. Out in yard with him, with slippers on. He worked most of day in cellar and about yard and house. Worked on hanging pictures in Gallaudet room until 3pm. Made ready for a start for Boston. Downtown with Johnny. At 4.45 met Kate Budd & boys at cars. Returned with them to house. Wrote letters. Off with Johnny at 7 for Springfield. Met Holland at Massasoit. Mr. & Mrs. Barlett on cars. Called at Mrs. Merriam's. Met Bradley, just engaged to May Gray. Sat there until 10. Back to hotel. Talked with Johnny of Convention report, Bible history, etc. Retired at 12. Sent three S.S. letters and telegrams and one other.
Saturday, April 15, 1871

(Springfield) Up at 6.10. Bright morning. Mr. Bradley came to breakfast with me. Johnny left for home at 7. I left for Boston at 7.15. Counted up travel for 1870 on cars. Met Gen. E. Lyman, Hon. E. H. Sawyer, and others. Wrote up diary, on cars. Reached Boston at 11. Called at Shute's, Noyes, & Abbott's. Met Pratt & Judge Smith. "Knightly Soldier" published in new edition. Called with Shute on Mr. Coolidge. Dined at Parker's. Off at 3pm for home. Met Mr. Arms, Miss Buckingham and others on cars. Worked again on travel items for 1870. Supped at Massasoit. Home at 7.30. Gurdon had been trout-fishing with good success. Rode downtown with him. Took bath. Went to bed at 10.30, taking hot cream of tartar. Sent letter to Fred from Springfield.

(Hartford) Up at 7.50. Bright day. Down to Pearl St. church with Johnny to hear Rev. Mr. Demming of Worburn preach. His sermon was on Jacob's Well, and the duty of every man to dig some well. Walked from church with him. Slept at home, most of afternoon. In evening read poetry - from Bonar's Hymns to family in our bed-room. Retired at 10.30.
Monday, April 17, 1871

(Hartford) Up at 7. Down to market before breakfast for pork. Trout for breakfast. Cold morning. Johnny and I made sundry attempts to start a fire. He went downtown for kindling. Fire started in afternoon. Hung pictures again in Gallaudet room. Balanced cash. Downtown alone before tea. In evening wrote on Annual Report until 11.15. Then aided Johnny in his report of Bridgeport Convention. Retired at 12.10. He set up to finish report in his room - and mail it by owl train. Sent three S.S. letters and one other.
Tuesday, April 18, 1871

(Hartford) Up at 9 with headache. Dr. Hunt called to say he was off for California. Worked on Annual Report. Johnny attempted to go to Norwich by 1.50 train but missed it. Mr. Phelps came to put in ventilating box in attic. Finished Report. Mrs. Ashton & Kate Dutton called in forenoon. Kate Budd's boys went to Debamater's to have pictures taken. Down to post-office with Johnny. He off at 6.15 for Norwich. Took tea at Mr. Fessenden's with Kate. Wrote letters. Downtown to mail them. Called at Father's. Sent four S.S. letters and one other.

(Hartford) Johnny off for Norwich. Wrote letters during much of the day. Downtown after dinner. Sent ten S.S. letters. Johnny back at 6.30. Had talk with him about Lamman. Walked with him to post-office, druggists, etc. Retired at 11.

(Hartford) Up at 6.45. At 8.15, Johnny was off for Winsted. At 10 went with Twichell to prize declamations and readings at High School. He sat as judge of readings. I of declamations. Sat all forenoon. Met with Committee of award at 12.40. Rainy noon and afternoon. Worked on sermon most of afternoon. Downtown to post-office. Called at furniture rooms. In evening, Johnny returned. Downtown with him. Again worked on sermon. Retired at 10.45. Sent four S.S. letters and two others.
Friday, April 21, 1871

(Hartford) Up at 5.30. Off at 6 for Springfield. Breakfasted at Massasoit. Off at 8 for Mr. Tom station. Thence to E. Hampton. Called at Walter Camp's room. Thence to Dr. Seelye's and to Mr. Wright's. Found Walter at recitation. With him at his room. Off with Dr. Seelye at 10 for Northampton. Thence to Springfield. Called at Merriam's. Off for home at 12.10. Home at 1. Downtown in afternoon with Johnny. Gas fitter changed bracket in spare room. Out to High-school in evening, but returned to work on sermon. Retired at 11. Sent on S.S. letter and one other.

(Hartford) Up at 7.30. Cloudy morning. Wrote letters. Wrote on sermon, again. At 12.20 off for Springfield. Dined at Massasoit. Off at 1.45 for Mr. Tom Station. Walter Camp met me there. Rode with him to Northampton by river road. Called at Bridgeman's. Met Gen. Otis. Rode to East Hampton. At Dr. Seelye's worked on sermon. After tea, called on Mr. Wright. Wrote again on sermon. At 8.30 me Mr. Wright in committee of alumni Association. Arranged for request to Trustees for general catalogue of Seminary. Called at Walter Camp's room. Mr & Misses Barry of Boston. At Dr. Seelye's at 9.15. Wrote on sermon. Finished it at 11. Retired at 11.30.

(East Hampton, Mass.) Up at 6.30. Cool day. Revised sermon. Out to church at 10.15. Preached from Luke 11:35 at Payson church. Attended S.S. Called at hotel and at Walter's room after lunch. In afternoon preached from Ps 46:2, at Payson church. Addressed students in chapel prayer meeting at 3 o'clock. Walter dined at Dr. Seelye's. Walked with Walter. In evening addressed children of 0000 and Payson church S.S. schools from Ps 119:105. Mr. Tho. Sawyer and Mr. J. H. Sawyer called at Dr. Seelye's. Wrote Fred. Retired at 11.
Monday, April 24, 1871

(East Hampton, Mass.) Up at 7. Bright day. After breakfast, called at Walter's, Hotel, Mr. Knight's. Attended prayers at chapel. Off at 10 for Mr. Tom. Met Mr. Beach and wife on stage. At Springfield at 11.20. Bought eggs and olives. Called on Dea. Dixon. Home at 1. In afternoon, Mr. Van Lennep and son called. Downtown with Johnny. Walked to Colt's willow work factory and back. In evening went with Johnny, Sophy, Annie, and May to Van Lennup's lecture on Turkish customs, at Allyn Hall. Home and retired at 11.15. Sent three S.S. letters.

(Hartford) Up at 7.15. Cool, bright day. Wrote Mrs. Camp. Finished letter to Fred. Downtown at 12.30. McClunie agreed to turf edgings. Met Kate and Alice. Went with them to hair-dressers. Deposited checks. Bought straw matting to piece out in Johnny's room. Johnny dined with us. After dinner, wrote to the West, declining invitiations to S.S. Conventions. Downtown with Johnny. Telegraphed Fred. Bought bowls. Home at 5.30. Met Van de Camp. Off at 6.20 for Norwich. John Buck on cars. Fred met me at depot, went with him to Hakes. Talked about Miss Blackstone. Retired at 11. Sent five S.S. letters and three others.
