Monday, April 3, 1871

(Hartford) Up at 8.10. Damp and lowering day. Out with Johnny to Father's. With them went to polls to vote at state and city election. Johnny cast his first vote. Called at post-office, Talcott & Post's, Rawson Reed's, etc. Returned to house at noon feeling quite weak. Called at Father's after dinner. Saw Gurdon's new fish picture. Wrote letters about Knightly Soldier. Gave copy of book to James. Downtown with Johnny. Called at Kibbe's, Geer & Pond's, and Seidler's. In evening, balanced cash. Downtown with Johnny at 9pm to see about election returns. At Courant office, with Gen. Hawley, Gov. Jewell, & others until 11. At Central Hall a half hour, hearing Gen. Hall & Gen. Hawley speak. Ate oysters with Hawley. Again at his office until 1.40. Back to hill with T. T. Fisher & Johnny. Retired at 2. Sent ten S.S. letters and one other.
