(Hartford) Up at 9.15. Wrote letters. Downtown to bank and druggist's with Alice. Off at 12.20 for Boston. Met Gen. Howard on cars. Sat with him until we reached Boston. At Springfield dined and met Holland. At Boston met Shute. Went across city with him to Eastern R.R. depot. Supped at Lowell depot. Off for Salem at 6.15. Train detained by breakdown ahead. Reached Salem about 8 o'clock. Snowing. Stopped at Mrs. Lefavour's. Called at Rev. S. H. Pratt's. Met Rev. F. F. Emerson there. Back to Mrs. Lefavour's about 10pm. Retired at 11.30. Sent five S.S. letters and telegrams and one other.
