Thursday, October 5, 1871

(Milwaukee & St. Paul R.R.) Up at 5.30. Crossed the Mississippi & breakfasted at Prairie du Chien about 7.30. Off again on cars. Wrote letters & finished sketch for Springfield Republican. Dusty & smokey in the morning. Rained from soon afternoon for two hours or so. From Milton Junction & Watertown by Chicago & Northwestern R.R. Mailed letters at Milton. Met Mr. & Mrs. Marsh of Watertown depot. Went with them to Fond du Lac. Attended Convn. of Cong. & Presb. churches of Wisconsin. Heard Past. Merriman preach on Resurrection of the Body. Off at 9 for Chicago. Retired at 9.30 in sleeping car.
