Saturday, October 7, 1871

(Chicago, Alton & St. Louis R.R.) Up at 6.30. At 7am, breakfast car was attached. Had breakfast near Alton. At E. St. Louis at about 9.30. Annoying time getting over to city. At Paxson's office about 10.45. Found Kingsbury & Ensign there. Received letters from Alice & Johnny. Answered them. Out to Fair Grounds with all hands, Great show there. Dined at May Flower booth. Met Mrs. Monteith, Mrs. Merwin & Rev. Mr. Powell. Back to Paxson's. Sent letter to Courant & a note to Gen. Hawley. Took room at Lachele House. Changed to Southern Hotel. Paxson called. Took bath. Retired at 11.
