Tuesday, October 3, 1871

(Milwaukee & St. Paul R.R.) Up at 6.30. Breakfasted at Prairie du Chien, Wis. Off on steamer for No. McGregor. Saw and crossed Mississippi for first time. Beautiful morning. Off again on cars. Wrote Alice & Fred and sketch of morning for newspapers. Wrote up diary. Dined at Owatonna at 3.30. At Faribault soon after 4. Very smoky from prairie fires. Stopped at Barron House. Walked to deaf & dumb institution. Saw Mr. Noyes. He took tea with me at hotel. Met sundry Faribault gentlemen. Out to Rev. Mr. Williams' after tea. Went with him to evening prayer-meeting at church. Pleasant meeting. Said a few words as to Paul before Agrippa. Returned to hotel. Retired at 10.30.
