(Springfield, Mass.) Up at 5.20. Bright day. Off at 7 for New York. At Hartford met Johnny & Sophy. Wrote up diary. Reached New York at 1pm. Called on Tyler. Lunched with him. Downtown. Had hair cut. Called at Naval pay-master's. Heard of Gray's "resignation". Bought strawberries at Washington market; also gauntlets and cord. At 4.15 met Foreign S.S. Committee at Tyler's office. Later, lunched at 27th St. depot. Off for home at 8. Took berth in sleeping-car. Met young Abbe of 10th C.V. Home at 1. Spoke to Johnny about plans of Tuesday. Retired at 1.45am. Sent one letter.
