Friday, June 9. 1871

(Hartford) Up at 9. Anxious over work to be done. Deaf-mute boys finished work in cellar. Downtown with Johnny. Off at 1.50 for Norwich. Long talk with Mr. Blackstone as to Fred. At Norwich met Gen. Aiken. Went with him to new factory. Met Gov. Buckingham there. Met Fred at his office. Went with him to post-office and his room. Supped at Mrs. Hakes'. Out to call on Dana. He away. Called on Geo. Coit. No message from Mr. Woodruff at 9.15. Went to hotel & registered. Down to depot to meet Dana. Telegram came at last minute. Off at 9.40 without valise for New York via New London & steamer. Shared state-room with Col. Selden. Retired at 12. Sent six S.S. letters and two others.
