Thursday, October 7, 1869

(New York) Up at 6.30. After breakfast at Van Santvoord's, off with Fred for Hudson River R.R. He left for Utican at 8pm. Rode downtown. Called at barber's and had hair cut. Off for Brooklyn. Called at Navy yard. Looked for Capt. Balch and Chapn Dorrance. Started for home of latter. Getting on to de Kalb Ave. car, pistol fell from my pocket. One barrel exploded. Bullet entered conductor's leg. Sad time! Saw policeman. Told him the story. Went with him to station house. Got held for examination. Called at home of father of conductor. Thence to Wallace Gallaudet's. Home by 3pm train. Reached home at 7.20. Called at James'. Very anxious evening and night. Retired at 10.30. Called at Courant office. Sent one S.S. letter and four others.
