Monday, October 4, 1869

(Amherst, Mass.) Up at 7.15. Still raining very hard. Left Amherst at 10.40. Met Prof. C. Seelye on cars. Home at 1.45. Train delayed by wash of road. Telegram from Mrs. Merriam. Downtown at 4.30. At 5pm met Mrs. M at cars. Home to tea. Wrote on diary. Sent off two S.S. letters and one other. Heavy rain and great flood. Watched effects of storm on bank of Little River. Downtown after tea. Met Gen. Hawley. Talked over Boston trip. Called on Dr. Hunt. Retired at 11.15.
