(Rutland, VT) Up about 8.30. After breakfast at Bardwell House, called on Gen. Venzey, Gen. Baxter called at invited us to his house. Rode out with Dr. (blank) to West Rutland. Visited marble quarries. Back to Gen. Baxter's to lunch. Pleasant party there. Fine house and grounds. Gen. Devens came with Gen. Sprague and Col. Douglass of his staff about 4 o'clock. Dinner at 6. Judge Roland, Mr. Willard, Mr & Mrs. Park, Mrs. Gen. Hawley, Miss Hunter and others of the party. Retired about 11.30. Rode through Camp Doubleday in afternoon. At reception of Gov. Converse's in evening.
