Saturday, October 4, 1873

(Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania) Up at 6. Cloudy morning. Visited coal mine after breakfast saw screening, sifting, loading, etc. Off at 9.35 for home with Smith, Stout, & Mr. Frankle. Frankle & Hill left at Mauch Chunk. Wrote up diary. At New York about 3.50. Waited for Smith at market. Missed him. Off by 6.30 train for home. Long talk with Smith (who rejoined me at depot) about appointments and excuses. Home about 9.45. Called at Father's. Retired at 10.30. (Johnny away to Lebanon.)
