Peison on cars. Met Holland & Marsh. Called at Dr. Buckinham's & Judge Smith's. Took supper at Massasoit. Met Mr. Atwater, Rev. Mr. Eustis & Judge Smith. By mistake as to time left behind. Retired, at Massasoit, at 10.45. (Called at Judge Smith's between 9 and 10.) Sent letter to Fred, also seven S. S. letters.

Called at Kinsley's & Pratt's. Went with Col. Attwood to Custom House. Saw Judge Russell. Thence to Kinsley's & Shute's. Met W. C. Chapin. Dined at Parker's with Shute's. Called at Goodman's, Pollard's, Chapman's, Boston Tract Soc'y etc. Wrote up diary. Took supper with Shute at Parker House. Retired at 10.30.

Dined at Mary Prime's. Down to 599 Bdway. Met Eggleston, Vincent & others to arrange for Nat'l Conv'n. At 10.15pm rode down town. Mailed letter to Gray. Took oyster's at Dorlan's. Off at 11pm for New Haven on Str. Traveller. State room with strangers. Retired at 11.45.

Called at Holland's & Dr. Buckingham's. Back home by 5.10 train. In eve'g took bath. Alice again ill. Prayed twice with her. Sent six S. S. letters. Retired at 12.

At 1am she broke down (shared state room with stranger - retiring at 11.30.)

Times office. Rode with Zamguies to Bethany Miss'n S. S. Hall to attend Teacher's Institute. Spoke there on Helps over Hard Places. Again answ'd Questions. Took tea in S. S. parlor. Attended prayer meeting. In eve'g spoke on Home S. S. Back to hotel at 10.30. Met Kingsbury at Institute. Wrote awhile to Fred. Retired at 12.15.

Went hom to dinner with Mr. Dorrance. At convention in afternoon. Met Atherton. Went with him & others to Rev. Dr. Fish's to tea. In evening, spoke on Home and S.S. Instruction. H. Thane Miller & others spoke. Took ice cream etc. with Atherton. Back to Mr. Dorrance's at 11. Retired, with Atherton at 12. Talked until 1.

Passed night with Mr. Merrill. Retired, with severe head-ache at 12.15.

Back to Conv'n at 8pm for closing service. Delightful occasion. Conv'n adjourned at 11pm. Off for New York at 12.15. Reached Astor House at 12.45. Retired at 1.10. Mr & Mrs. Douglass on cars and at Astor House.

Returned to house. Put on chaplain's uniform and rode with Gen. Hawley as escort to the Governor (of other states and ex-Govs) carriage. Lunched at Gov. Jewell's room. Home to dinner at 4pm after hearing message at State House. Down to Allyn House in evening to dinner with staffs of Governors. Made out monthly report. Sent one S.S. letter. Home from dinner at Allyn House at 11. Retired at 11.50.

Had earnest and profitable talk with Fred. Sat in smoking car. Snake ran loose there. Excitement and scattering. Took supper at Rochester. Dozed on seat in sleeping car. Fred left me home at 2am. Retired and 2.15 am.

(Hartford) Up at 8. Pleasant day. Mary Gordon with us. Read letters. Balanced cash. Downtown to bank, confectioner's, etc. Met Alice & Mary Gordon at cars. Also Gen. Howard & son. Mary Gordon went to Boston. Had ice-cream at dinner (& strawberries from Boston). Sent eleven S.S. letters and three others. Downtown after dinner. Paid sundry bills. In evening went with Alice to Mr. Fessenden's. Thence to Christ Church to heard Ned deliver his oration before Trinity College House of Convocations. Had talk with Ned about it, later. Again at Mr. Fessenden's house at 11.30. Tho. G. with us. Retired at 12.15. Ned & Susy off at midnight for New York & Liverpool.

At New Haven called at D. H. Wiley's, Miss Bacon's, Rev. E. L. Clark's, Rev. Dr. Bacon's, F. T. Jarman's, J. G. North's, Prof. H. N. Day's & Fred Baldwin's. Had talk with Kirkham. Took tea at New Haven Hotel. Again called at Prof Day's. Met Miss Jenny Baldwin & Fred, at Mr. Wilcox's, & met him & family at Miss Bacon's mother's as I came away. Attempted to take steam boat train home. Missed it. Tel'd Alice. Back to New Haven House. Wrote on letter to Fred. Off for home at 11.15. Home & retired at 1.30. Met Vanderbilt on cars & Brownell at Depot. Sent 15 S.S. letters.

Kendall. Off for home at 2.20. Wrote on cars. Hard rain. Talked with Mr. Bull as to Asylum policy. Home at 4.15. Sent three S.S. letters. Downtown. Bought vest. Called at Dr. Hunt's, Fisher's, Sykes', Kelsey's, etc. Back to house at 6.30. After tea called at Father's. Saw Annie Slosson. Burned pile of letters on my return. Sorted papers. Took bath. Retired at 12.10.

Excitment over pick-pocket. At Boston, met Shute. Went to his office. Thence to Lowell depot and Winchester. Pratt met me. Went to his new home for first time. Called after tea at Dr. Webb's - Edw'd Everett's old home. Wrote up diary & speech notes. Retired at 11.15.

Spoke at noon in S.S. main & inft dep'ts. Back to Winchester with young Pollard, met Pratt at his church. All to Pratt's together. In afternoon attended Winchester S.S. Concert. Subject: The Good Shepherd. Spoke, with blackboard notes, on Lost Sheep & Good Shepherds call to them. Rode with Mr. Chase to Newton Corner. Severe thunderstorm came up in afternoon. Addressed S.S. Anniversary at Eliot Ch. Newton Corner in evening. Gov. Claflin there, also Gen. Blakeslee. Home for night with Mr. Mackintire & Mr. Cobb. Retired, at home of latter at 11.15.

Wrote Haskell of Portland (Bought new inkstand. Called at Goodman's in Boston) Sent letter to Fred. took supper at Massasoit. Home at 7.15. Had talk with Boston rich man on cars about Grant etc. Supposed him to be Isaac Rick. Thought of going to New York at night, but too tired. Retired at 10.30.

Letter from Fred. Called at Father's. Met Joe Hawley. Building on Main St. fell down. Went down to see it. In evening left by 9.40 train for New York, via 11 o'clock boat from New Haven. Wrote Fred awhile on boat. Retired at 12.30. Tel'g Tyler.

After tea called with Alice at Father's to see Prime and Mary just back from White Mountains. Retired at 11.

Took supper at Massasoit. Had talk with Marsh. Off for Boston at 8.30. Stopped at Parker House. Took cold bath. Retired at 1am. Sent nine S.S. letters & telegrams.

Back to Greenfield & up at 8.27 to Brattleboro. Called there on Mr. Cheney & Mr. Estey. Stopped at Brattleboro House. Retired at 11.15 after commencing letter to Fred.
