(New York) Up at 8. Bright, wild day. Out to Hotel. Had boots blacked. Took Congress water. After breakfast off at 10 am for home. Wrote and read for Independent. Met John B. Smith at New Haven. Home about 2pm. Wrote and read letters at home most of the afternoon. Called at Father's. Mr. Childs called before tea. Discussion with James as to Charley and the old New Haven row, at Father's in the evening. Wrote up diary. Retired at midnight.
