Monday, August 2, 1869

(Hartford) Up at 8. Down town, after breakfast, with Sophy & May hunting autograph fans. Looked for desk at furniture stores. Stopped at depot. Saw Miss Mather & Gov. Hawley. After dinner wrote letters, balanced cash. Entered collections & expenses for July. Had letter from Dr. Smyth of Chaston & from Gray & Walter. Called at Father's. Commenced iron for Baby. He seemingly better. Downtown again to post-office & druggist's. After tea Kitty Camp called. Called on Gen. Easton at Mrs. Colt's. Sent six S.S. letters & two others. Kitty Camp with us. Lay down from 12.

(Hartford) Up at 7.30 quite refreshed. Hot day. Off at 9.40 for Springfield. Met Capt. Chamberlain at depot. Wrote on cars. Called at Holland's & Mr. Merriam's. Met Parsons & Marsh. Dined with latter at Massasoit. Called at gold pen maker's & exchanged pen. Off for house at 2.20. Wrote five S.S. letters and two others. In evening worked on picture hanging up-stairs.Had letter from Fred, Baty seemed better. Down town before tea. Stopped at Am. Pub. House. Rec'd better copy of Twain's book. Lay down from 12.50. Wrote on article for Advance in evening. Read it to Alice. Kitty Camp with us.

(Hartford) Up at 8.15. Revised artile for Advance. Read it at Father's. Sent check to bal'ce monthly account. Sent five S.S. letters and two others. Down town twice during the day. In evening hung pictures again, and read to Alice. Packed fish-pole for Walter. Nelly Camp with us. Lay down from 11.

Thursday, August 5, 1869

(Hartford) Fletcher off for Stafford Springs. Up at 8. Dr. Thompson called. Down to express office & to depot. Sent Walter's pole. Commenced revision of sermon on Seed Sowing. Worked at it most of day. Baby evidently better. Downtown to bank & post-office after early dinner. Sent two S.S. letters and three others. Charley Camp came in evening to talk over his plans. Worked again on sermon. No one with us for the night. Undressed for first time at night in nearly two weeks. Fletcher returned in evening. Worked on May's doll palace. Retired at 12.

(Hartford) Up at 8.10. Cool morning. Looked over items for Tyler for the Independent. Worked on revision of sermon nearly all day and evening. Capt. Chamberlain called for me to go to Asylum with his friends. Went out with them. Asylum closed. Downtown before tea. Baby much better. Called at Father's in evening. Wrote briefly to Fred. Took bath. Retired at 12.15. Sent six S.S. letters.

(Hartford) Up at 8.15. Cool morning. Downtown. Bought new valise. Met Rev. H. Powers. Entered sums in Savings Bank for children. Home at 12. Off at 12. 18 for depot. Train late. Met Rev. C. Nichols at depot; also Capt. Coit. Off for Boston at 12.55. Had lunch at depot. Wrote on sermon until reaching Boston. Called at Shute's. Stopped at Parker House. Called at Thacher's. He away. Wrote on sermon until 11.30. Had telegrams from Holland, having written him at Springfield. Commenced letter to Fred. Retired at 12.15am. Sent five S.S. letters and two others.
Sunday, August 8, 1869

(Boston) Up at 7.30. Pleasant, cool day. Revised my sermon at and after breakfast. Met Pres't A. D. Smith, Pres't of Darmouth College. Shute called for me at 10. Out to Clarendon St. Baptist Church with him. Preached in forenoon from Gal. 6:7. Misses Mather & Perit there. At noon went to dinner with Mr. Butler. Sat with family awhile. Then in room by myself. Wrote on letter to Fred. Out to S.S. at noon. In aft'n preached from Mk 1:37. Henry P. Haven there. Also Capt. Brooks & Col. Dyer. Went out to Roxbury to Mr. W. H. Hill's with Capt. Ropes to see Misses Mather & Perit. Met young Ropes just from Europe. In to Boston at 9pm. Met Mr. Haven at Fremont House & talked until midnight. Wrote awhile. Retired at 1am.

(Boston) Up at 8.45 tired and head-achey. Met Chas. Thomas. Called at Shute's. Thence to Pratt's. Had long talk with him over Special Donations. "Robinson S.S." etc. Back to Shute's. Met Mr. Haven. Called at Chapman's. He dined with Shute & myself. Back to Pratt's. Out to Dr. Cullis'. Looked up carpet at Torrey's & for desk at 407 Washington St. Off for home at 4.30. Wrote to Fred. Home at 9.40. Letter from Gray as to his trouble with Wallaces. Called at Father's. Took tea there. Frank Kennedy there. Wrote Gen.s Terry & Gray. Down to midnight train. Retired at 1.15.

(Hartford) Up at 8.20. Cool, bright morning. Downtown after breakfast with Sophy. Tel'd Gray as to Gen. Terry. Called at Father's. At 2pm up to Springfield. Letters from Allen, Walter & Fred. From latter as to smoking! Wrote to him on cars and mailed letter at Spring'd. Called at Holland's & Mrs. Merriam's. Back by 5.10 train. Wrote to Gray & again to Fred. Wrote up diary. Sent three other S.S. letters & one personal. Retired at 10.30.

(Hartford) Up at 8.30. Re-tacked netting on window screen for dining room. Hung door-screen. Aided Alice. Wrote four S.S. letters. Looked over papers on table. Fletcher off for Stafford Springs. Mr. Fuller of New London called. After dinner, downtown. Called at Dr. Hunt's. Met him & Dr. Jackson. Home at 4. Sent letter to Fred. In evening wrote letters. Called at Camp's. Met Gen. Franklin on street cars. Retired at 11.15.

(Hartford) Up at 7.30. After early breakfast, downtown for carriage. Met Rev. A. C. Roe of Christian Commission. Rode home. Took Alice & Baby out to ride. Called at Camps. On return, wrote letters. Downtown before dinner. Called at Post editorial rooms. After dinner wrote letter to Frank Allen and other correspondence. Downtown again and called at Dr. Hunt's. Paid Peckham's & Litchfield & Flower's bills. After tea, packed valise, took bath, arranged business with Fletcher, called at Father's & again wrote letters. Sent off eleven S.S. and four other letters. Retired at 11.30.
Friday, August 13, 1869

(Hartford) Up at 6.30. Off at 8.10 with children for Bridgeport, after talk with Fletcher about business. Left children with Bern Budd. Met Calvin Child. Rode with him to Stamford. Wrote Alice on cars. Reached New York at 12.40. At 10 Bible House found letter from Fred. Downtown. Had hair cut. Called at Wallace's. Rec'd coupon money for Alice. Up town by 8th Ave. cars. Wrote up diary in Hudson River Depot. Also wrote record of addresses & sermons. Thunder shower. Met W'm E. Dodge, Jr. Off for Watertown at 6.30. Sent accident ticket of insurance to Alice with letter. Read & looked over sermon in cars. Retired, anxious & troubled about 10.15. Sent five S.S. letters and three others.
Saturday, August 14, 1869

(R.R. for Watertown) Up after restless night at 4.15am, hoping to meet Fred at Rome. Again abed until 6.40. Up, uneasy and anxious until reaching Watertown at 7.50. Fred & Walter met me. Up to their home. With Fred in room anxious about tobacco. Sad hour or two! Unable to eat breakfast. With Fred until 10.30. Then he promised me never to smoke again. Thank God! Down to store & bank. Met Tyler. Back to house. Dr. Porter called & invited me to preach to young men. After dinner rode to Sacket's Harbor with Fred & his mother. Called at Walter B. Camp's. Went out rowing with Fred. Met friends at Mr. Camp's. Back to Watertown at 9.45, reaching there at 11.45. Retired at 12.15.

(Watertown, N.Y.) Rainy night & early morning. Up at 7.30. Looked over sermon. Sat with family. Out to forenoon services. Heard Rev. Dr. Porter preach on Faith. Stopped at S.S. at noon and addressed it. Back with Fred to house. Had talk with him about his having smoked. Loving assurances from him. After dinner talked with him & read Allen's letter in room. Looked over sermon. Out to mission S.S. Spoke there. Back to house & again worked on sermon. In evening preached at Presb'n Ch. to young men, from Gal 6:7, on Sowing & Reaping. Large audiencec. Sat at house while they were singing after church. Retired at 11.45.
Monday, August 16, 1869

(Watertown, N.Y.) Up at 7.15. Fred went out to feed chickens. Downtown with Mr. Camp. Talk with him in bank about Fred. Met Tyler and talked with him on business. After dinner walked to Dr. Binsse's. Had nice call there. Then to Sterling's & Kimball's, also to skating rink. After tea, called at Mrs. Paddock's on Miss Frost. Home, after call at post-office. Read in Mark Twain's book to family. Retired at 12 o'clock. Fred very tired. (Called on Dr. Porter's in afternoon.)

(Watertown, N.Y.) Up at 7.10. Cool, cloudy day. After breakfast, off at 8.15 for home. Fred with me to Rome. Delightful ride with him. Read 0000 on tobacco & Mrs. Stowe on Reading. Looked over his diary. At 11.45 left him at Rome. Met Campbell of Htfd. & his brother of Brattleboro. Wrote Fred. Reached Albany at 4.25. Too late for Spring'd train. Met Col. Pettibone. Up to Delaware House. Wrote Fred again. Walked about town. Off for Springfield at 8.20. Wrote awhile on cars. Then slept. At Massasoit at 1.35. Met Lt. Hurlburt of Gen. Terry's staff there. Had Room 113. Wrote awhile. Retired at 2.10. Sent three S.S. letters, by Fletcher.
Wednesday, August 18, 1869

(Springfield) Up at 6. After breakfast, off at 7 for home. Lt. Hurlburt on cars. Home at 8.20. All well. Letters from Gray, Drs. Smyth & Plumer & Capt. Senn, & others. Napped it for an hour and a half before dinner. Wrote after dinner. Downtown with Fletcher. Bought fruit. Talked with him as to his plans of life. Home & wrote up diary. Sent off six S.S. letters and one other. In evening wrote on letter to Fred, also on other letters. Retired at 10.30.

(Hartford) Up at 8. Wrote letters. Looked over papers. Downtown after dinner. Deposited checks at Bank. Sent off ten S.S. letters and three others. Paid Alice for coupons.

(Hartford) Up at 7.40. Down to butcher's after breakfast. Off at 9.45 for Springfield. Called there on Holland and at gold-pen mender's. Off at 12n. for East Hampton. Called there on Dr. Seelye, Dr. Henshaw, Mrs. Thos. Sawyer, & Capt. Miller. Looked up board & room for Walter Camp. Off for Northampton with Dr. Henshaw at 3.45. Called there at Bridgeman's. Wrote Fred there. (At Springfield mailed long letter to him.) Wrote also Mrs. Camp & Walter. Home by evening express train. Wrote Mr. Camp. Downtown with letters. Brought home ice-cream for Alice. Took bath. Retired at 12.10. Sent one S.S. letter & five others. Called at Mother's & had long talk about Father.
Saturday, August 21, 1869

(Hartford) Up at 5. Off for Woodstock at 6.10. Wrote Dr. Porter and on letter to Fred on the way. At Plainfield took freight train and suffered in it for two & a half hours. At Putnam met Fletcher. Rode to Woodstock. Stopped at Rev. Mr. Beach's. Spoke at 1.30pm to large gathering of S.S.'s & others on Green. At 3pm, band commenced playing - from Boston. At 3.30 rain commenced. Severe storm. Stopped at Mr. Beach's. Wrote awhile in upper room. Off with Dr. Williams at 5.30. for Pomfret. Stopped at his home. Met Dea. Coolidge there. Retired at 11pm. (Wrote George R. Bliss).
